KURURUN FA
KAISHU KATA - "Empty hand Kata"
KURURUNFA - "tranquility forever; to stop the destruction"
This kata was transmitted from the Chinese Master Ryuryu Ko to Sensei Kanryo Higaonna,
but its original creator it is ignored.=
"Kururunfa" contains a wide fan of open hand techniques, as well as
several techniques that demand a special coordination between the hand (or arm)
movements, and the hip movements.=
As "Seisan", "Kururunfa" (Kururunha, Kududunfa or Kududunha) has
soft movements followed by hard movements; although in "Kururunfa" the
differences between hard and soft techniques are more marked. Slow movements are
continued by a pause, and then it continue with explosive and devastating techniques;
and - in this way - to repeat the cycle again.=
One of the most advanced Katas in GOJU RYU, takes her name from a sequence of
techniques that - in the correct positions - show several escape forms to the
"catch key" known as DOUBLE NELSON, very used in several fight forms.- These
sequences and positions are called KURURUN FA NO KAMAE.=
In the book of the GOJU KAI JAPAN KARATE FEDERATION the name of this Kata appears as
it is shown in the KANJIS of the figure, whose transcription to ROMAGI it is
KURU TON HA.=
KURURUN FA would not have a literal translation, but a philosophical meaning that
would vary in function of the interpretation of each School.=
For Master Seiichi Akamine, creator of KENSHIN RYU Style and
Philosophy, the meaning of the name arises from the conjunction of the ROMAGIS
KURU, UN and HA; that could be translated as
MODELING THE DESTINY OF A SCHOOL or, in other words, TO MAKE THE WAY, WALKING.
Nevertheless, Master Akamine also called it KURU TON FA, since - being expert
in KOBUDO - he executed it with an arm called TONFA.=
Other Masters understand that the combined ROMAGIS would be KUMO, KU, KURUMU, UN and
HA; and that the meaning would be TO WRAP THE SCHOOL (or TO WRAP THE DESTINY OF THE
SCHOOL) IN NINE MOONS, in metaphor that mentions "the reborn", or "the
never die".=
The simplification of the ROMAGIS KURUMARU, UN and HA, would mean TO WRAP UP IN THE
DESTINY OF A SCHOOL, in other words MELTING WITH THE SCHOOL, or TO BE THE SCHOOL; that
it is another of the philosophical meanings that some Masters give to the Kata KURURUN
FA.=
This range of interpretations - that don't embrace what technically the Kata teaches,
neither the execution of the same one, usually happen in styles so ancient as GOJU
RYU.=
Kururunfa it is practiced by other styles. Then arise other interpretations and
translations as BETRAYING THE DESTINY OF A SCHOOL; giving to the expression "TO
BETRAY THE DESTINY" the meaning of "MODIFYING THE DESTINY" with the
effort, if in this way it was necessary.=
Some historians believe that nine schools were betrayed by some trust students, and
that - in the fight that was begun - different techniques arose. Combining these
techniques with others, it would been created the Kata KU URU UN HA (in honor to those
who fought saved the Schools) that would mean "SKY DESTINY OF THE NINE BETRAYED
SCHOOLS.=

No longer of its meaning, the important thing is that this Kata show very advanced techniques, as well as positions (such as SOTO HACHI MONJI DACHI), and not very habitual displacements in GOJU RYU'S forms. - Even, some GOJU RYU lines of CENTRAL JAPAN execute a traffic from SHIKO DACHI, going by UCHI HACHI MONJI DACHI, to arrive to SOTO HACHI MONJI DACHI. These positions, together with the corresponding BUNKAI, have a lot to do with the name of this Kata.= |
