Student and Master looked at the sea from the top of the mountain.
I had never seen anything so beautiful, neither so immense, said the first one...
- The Master responded: "And you are only looking at the surface".
The student meditated and he asked:
What is it so important and deep that we should not leave of knowing in the time that we lapse?...
- "Who today I was... who yesterday I will be... who tomorrow I have been..." abstractly the Sensei answered.
I don't reach to understand, the young man said... and because of his Master's silence he continued:
When will I be able to know and to understand all the answers?...
- "When you can know all the questions", the Master answered.
And how can I end up knowing all the questions?, the young student asked...
- "When you are able to perceive the sounds of the silence", the old man responded.
Is this possible Master?, the student insisted...
The Master didn't answer...
... Hours of silence later the "OSS" of the student was listened.
- "Sit down that I will tell you a story”, his Master said...
In the eleventh year of his reign, the emperor from China - a Mongolian Khan named Go Uda - decided to enlarge his empire, and he sent a powerful fleet to invade Japan. The island of Tsushima was the first one that received the fury of the aggressors and it was practically desolated.
Only some residents were able to escape toward the caves of Unishima, and there they prayed toIzaname and Izanage, gods of the winds.
That night a strong storm whipped the region for what the invaders should return immediately to their origin place to avoid that their ships collapsed in the bay.
Quickly it arose the rumor that the powerful Japanese gods of the winds had defeated the ambitious emperor, the one which furious sent an even bigger fleet that the first one to consolidate his intentions.
Again the island of Tsushima was razed and another time some villagers hid in the caves of Unishima and they prayed to Izaname and Izanage again.
A strongest wind that the previous one arrived, destroying completely the invader ships that in this time collapsed in the bay.
Since that event, the legend tells that Izaname and Izanage were the first " Kamikazes " (gods of the winds) that destroyed the invaders ships. For this reason is that the suicidal soldiers - that in the world war shattered their airplanes against the enemy ships, to sink them - they were called " Kamikazes ", and the " OSS " with which they greeted their commandants when they went toward the death, symbolizes the sound of the wind.
- "From now, that you know the legend, the "OSS" will have meaning for you, and, if you end up perceiving the sounds of the silence, you will know if you will continue using - or you won't do it - this martial greeting".
Master and student began the descent. Only the song of the birds challenged the depth of the silence, while the melodic blend of the wind and the sea furrowed their thoughts.
Once under the mountain the student said:
Master, for me you are the answer, how can I walk your way?...
And the Master's voice was listened:
- "The finger that shows the moon, is not the moon"...
- "Who shows you the truth, should not be taken as an end in itself, but as a mean to reach it"...
- "But you should always have present that each person should walk his own way, and that even the best of the Masters will always continue being a student"...
